Are you tired of the default desktop environment of your Linux distribution and want to try something different? The solution is called Budgie Desktop, the desktop environment of Solus OS. Here is how to install Budgie Desktop on Linux.
To install Budgie Desktop on Ubuntu, or any derivates like Kubuntu or Lubuntu, you need to use the fossfreedom’s Budgie Desktop PPA. In addition to Budgie Desktop itself, on this PPA you will also find the Arc theme and Moka icons set (which are automatically installed as dependencies) that are part of the official theme of Budgie Desktop.
The first thing you need to do is to open a terminal and add the repository:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:fossfreedom/budgie-desktop
Then update the apt-get packages list:
sudo apt-get update
And finally install Budgie:
sudo apt-get install budgie-desktop
To install Budgie Desktop on Fedora you should use Fedora 23 with GNOME Shell; the procedure may work on other variants, but I haven’t test it.
Also, to enjoy a good visual experience you should install the Arc theme as it isn’t automatically installed like in Ubuntu.
Once you meet the above requirements you can open the terminal and enter into the folder containing the Fedora’s external repositories configuration files:
cd /etc/yum.repos.d/
Download the Budgie repository configuration files for Fedora 23:
sudo wget https://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:ikeydoherty:solus-project/Fedora_23/home:ikeydoherty:solus-project.repo
Then update the packages list:
sudo update dnf
And finally install Budgie with the following command:
sudo dnf install budgie-desktop
To install Budgie Desktop on Gentoo you need to enable the Sabayon overlay:
layman -a sabayon
Before you can run the above command you need to have Layman installed and configured; if you haven’t you can use the following guide.
Once the Sabayon overlay has been added, you cab install Budgie Desktop with the following command:
emerge --ask gnome-extra/budgie-desktop
Once the above command is finished, reboot the PC and from the login screen select the Budgie Desktop session.
